Gun owners must be heard over FCA mess

A new ruling means firearm licences are still valid, writes LEGAL GUN OWNER by e-mail

The case brought by the SA Hunters and Conservationists Association against the SAPS in respect of actions under the Firearms Control Act (FCA) of 2000 was vital to the future of constitutional law in South Africa.

The SAPS has for years ridden roughshod over the Constitution with the full backing of the ANC government. The victory handed down by Judge Bill Prinsloo means that all old licences remain valid until “the constitutionality of the FCA can be tested”.

This judge can obviously appreciate what gun owners and rights bodies have contended for many years – that the FCA is unconstitutional in many of its provisions and if fully implemented will deprive citizens of constitutional rights, including the right to life and property rights.

Anyone who now hands in their gun to comply with the June 30 deadline is crazy. That has been set aside by this verdict.

Gun owners have been kept in the dark by the SAPS.

You notice that there is once again no communication from SAPS on this latest change to the deadline. Firearms owners and those who support the rule of law and freedom must make their voices heard on this issue.

Government will take silence as acquiescence and acceptance.

Let us make it heard loud and clear that this law must go.
