Relicencing statistics to March 16 2009

This FCA process began after promulgation of the FCA in 2004 and ends March 30 2009 - by which date all 2.5 million firearm-owners would be expected to have applied for relicencing of their legally held firearms.

This has simply not happened as government envisaged - basically they anticipated that the process would see about 500 000 owners each year making application, thus over a 5 year period (2004 -2009) all 2.5 million applications would have been received and/or processed by granting or by refusing a licence.

Below is a chart showing the stats of what has happened.

From the figures above several deductions can be made with an acceptable degree of accuracy.

Firstly the figures relate only to applications received and do not address the question of application NOT received.

Your chance of being granted a licence appears to be about 50% in recent years but on average much lower - around 36% or about 1 in 3 - poor odds?

Of course these figures will include not only application for Relicencing of existing firearms but also NEW applications from people who wish to own a firearm for the first time - we do not have any split regarding this as this figure is not divulged.

One very important consideration - the applications for relicencing would be made by people who believe there would be no reason why they should be refused - such as a criminal record, a conviction for negligent use or loss of a firearm etc - in other words people like YOU, who perhaps anticipated no difficulty whatsoever in betting the new licence under the FCA.

The stats here show that they were quite wrong in that belief and that various government spokespeople were not exaggerating when they stated that the ultimate aim of the FCA is to remove ALL legally-held firearms from the citizens of SA.

Now to the crucial aspect that these figures reveal:

Individuals licenced under the old law 2 000 000 (est) .
Firearms licenced under the old law 4 000 000 (est) .
Applications for renewal of licences 881 136 22%
Firearms handed in for destruction 600 000 (est) .
Firearms which will become illegal on 30 June 2009 about 2.5 MILLION. .
Refusenik rate (people who are choosing NOT to relicence) 2 400 000 70%

If you have found our website, may we presume you have an interest in this subject and are in fact one of the 'refuseniks"? If so and as a law-abiding citizen of SA, you may be worried that you have failed to comply with the FCA - there are, judging by the figures above a lot of gun-owners like you!

But let us not worry - let us begin the fight for our rights TODAY!

We will not be persecuted by government and it's propagandist fellow-travellers such as the organisation known as Gun Free South Africa, nor will we be painted as 'criminals'

We will not be characterised as 'gun-nuts' or 'dangerous people' by proponents of disarmament or by government as a result of our having the foresight to take the sensible precaution of owning the means for defence

We will not accept that, now that we are deemed by government edict to own 'illegal' guns, we are so afraid to use them in self-defence for fear of legal consequences that our own lives and those of our loved ones are put at risk

We will not accept that we must hand in this legally owned and valuable property to authorities in the knowledge that they are likely to end up in unsuitable hands and possibly used in the commission of crime

We will not accept that removing firearms from legal owners can have any beneficial effect on crime or have any effect on the number of illegal guns in criminal hands
